The districts of the limited development and the protected military facilities cover more than 70%, so that the development of Uijeongbu has an unbalanced factor. Especially, during the cold war period, the development of Uijeongbu had been hampered because of the problems caused by military defense. However, with the collapse of the cold war and the reconciliation mood between South and North Korea, Uijeongbu is important as a strategic outpost for the following: the northward development, the exchange between South and North Korea, and peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula. As a result, sorts of restrictions have been relaxed to get a firm stand for new jump and balanced development.
Uijeongbu is in good harmony with great nature and boasts of an impressive scene with Mt. Dobong and Mt. Surak soaring eastwards and westwards. Uijeongbu has been playing its role as a gateway to Seoul, the capital of Korea, with a developed traffic network of two railways and three national roads.
Meanwhile, Uijeongbu is actively transforming itself into the self sufficient city. It aims to be not only balanced by agriculture, industry, commerce and administration but also harmonized with nature and resting space.
