Dongducheon, surrounded by the Machansan to the west, Soyosan, Guksabong and Wangbangsan to the east, and Chilbongsan and Haeryongsan to the south, is forming a valley in an oval shape in the middle, and Shin stream flows Hantan River from the south to the north.
Influenced by a typical continental climate as a mountainous inland district, Dongducheon has a huge temperature gap of the summer and the winter. The average yearly temperature is 10.3¡É, the average in January is £4.9¡É, and the average during August is 24¡É. The average amount of precipitation over the year is 1,378mm.
Considering the militarily strategic location, which is only 44 km away from Seoul, Dongducheon has developed quickly as a military town after the Korean War in between 1950 and 1953.
The 3rd national road called Peace Road is passing through Dongducheon, and, in December, 2006, the electrification of the Gyeongwon Railway line, which even connects to the Cheonan and Incheon, makes Dongducheon more viable city. Especially, as inter-Korean relationship is showing the reconciliation mood, Dongducheon is emerging as a starting point of a unified Korea.
With the relocation of U.S. Army base in Korea, Dongducheon ardently works to conduct city-wide campaign to make itself the Hub of Tour, Culture, and Inter-Korean Cooperation.
